So, here’s another update to add to my home decorating chronicles! Sometime last year, I set out on a mission to make my dining room a more “dine worthy” room. I bought our dining room table about 11 years ago at a family-owned furniture store in Ann Arbor. The dining area of our previous home, a condo, was on the smaller side. So my thinking was to get a glass top table to create an appearance of the room to look larger than it was. When I saw this beautiful glass table floating on a black wooden base, I was sold (by now, I am sure you are fully aware of my obsession with black furniture**eye winkie emoji**).
Along with the glass top table, I purchased four side chairs for each side of the table. The table could seat six; however, buying furniture wasn’t cheap. So I figured four side chairs were a good start.
When we moved to our current house, the dining area was also on the smaller side, plus it was more closed in, not an open space like our condo. So the glass top table still worked very well for the area.
First, there was my obsession with changing our very simple dining room mirror to something more glamorous. You can read about that here. Side note: adding a mirror versus a picture was also a part of the decorating strategy to make the dining area appear larger. After the mirror, I became obsessed with having more seating than just four. I considered purchasing an entirely new dining table and set of chairs (or dining bench because I love the look of fancy dining benches too). Still, three things occurred to me: 1) (again) purchasing furniture isn’t cheap, 2) yes, my table and chairs were over a decade old but practically still looked new and current, and 3) I still loved it!
So, the quick (and least expensive) answer to my problem was to up my decor sophistication with the “mismatched dining chair trend” and purchase two unique armchairs. The first place I looked at was Arhaus, of course!
My color scheme is black and white, which is as simple as it gets, so I knew it would not be that hard to find armchairs that flowed well. Enter my beautiful white armchairs! As I have said before, I’m a minimalist type of person, so I went with the same color palette, just a different chair design.
There are a lot of ways to pull off mixing and matching your dining chairs. You can do the same color but different design (like I did), same design but different color, same style but different design, or same material (like all wood chairs) but different design. You can mix vintage and modern designed chairs, play with height, texture, weight, or details.
Did I mention that I love the nail-head trim around the bottom of the chair? Gorg!
What am I considering next to spiff up my dining area? Window treatments. I’ve been thinking about drapery for quite some time so… we’ll see **eye winkie emoji**. As always, I’ll keep you updated on my progress!
By the way, here are six reliably chic ways to mix and match dining room chairs I found from browsing the web! Check it out! My two cents: if you need to increase your dining seating or want to add some uniqueness and style to your dining room, consider mixing and matching! Happy dining!
