So let’s go back to Sunday. This past Sunday was my 35th birthday. Birthdays have always been a big deal to me. Another year of beautiful life, yes that is always cause for celebration in my book. This year though I had a somewhat difficult time trying to decide exactly what I wanted to do to celebrate. I was getting my hair done a couple of weeks ago and my hair stylist mentioned going roller skating. I thought, now that might be fun.
Growing up we did a lot of roller skating. I remember my first pair of skates. They were white with red wheels. My mom got them from a Salvation Army that was actually not too far from the roller rink we often went to. I remember practicing in our basement with my brother and sister. Fun times! Anyway, Brian thought a skating party was a good idea so that’s what I went with. His two cents, “You should have it back in the D at Northland. Now that would be fun!” Northland roller rink was thee roller skating spot of our childhood. Our house was less than ten minutes from the rink. I hadn’t been to Northland since my freshman year of high school!
I called them and booked a private party!
Nothing had changed and I loved that! As I always say, home, sweet home! Let the good times roll!
Ok, so, I also had not been skating in a few years. I was never like the enviable jam skater but I was pretty decent and knew a “few” moves. I thought, just like riding a bike right? Nah. With my first attempt of backwards skating, I fell***insert multiple crying laughing face emojis***! In the pic below, that’s my friend (Kim) yelling back to me, “That’s what you get for trying to be so saucy!” ***insert more crying laughing face emojis*** Thanks Kim!
Ash saw mommy fall but still wanted in on the action so daddy geared him up.
I eventually got back up and caught up with a good friend (Shawn) who clearly had not forgotten all of the “saucy” moves! Shawn show me your ways please!!
He apparently grew tired of my lack of skill and went off to play Ms. Pac Man for a while!
So I had to rally up someone else!
I tell you, things are quite different on skates in your 30’s! But, it was all good times!
Just when I was getting the swing of it, it was time to cut my birthday cake!
And of course I had to take pics with my sibs because… they are my favorite people!
More skating please! Yes, I finally reclaimed my backward skating skills! Either that or dancing to Bell Biv DeVoe (Poison) gave me the illusion that I was getting it.
They even played Ghost Town DJ, My Boo, for me! It was one of my favs back in the day!
So I caught up with my boo!
Then this happened! Of course when I got up, I gave him the stare of death, “Why did you let me fall?!!!!”
He left me (LOL).
Like I said, it was all fun times!
I took usies!
And family pics!
We even got a group pic of those that lingered. After skating, I went back to my mom’s house for a family barbecue! All in all, Sunday was a good day!
Cheers to 35!
