If I am being honest, this year has been ghetto. And I have been taking it one ghetto day at a time. I was well on my way to internally writing the year off, telling myself to throw it away and try again next year until the glorious entrance of November. It was the first of November. That day I’ll always remember, yes I will. Cause that was the day that Ms. Ava DuVernay and Ms. Oprah Winfrey spoke to me on Instagram and called me, my younger brother and older sister’s portrayal of Queen Sugar’s siblings—Ralph Angel, Nova, and Charley Bordelon, “perfection,” and “excellent.”
Having someone as brilliant as Ms. DuVernay and iconic as Ms. Winfrey give me those raised and clapping hand emojis made my entire life. Was there screaming in unbelief involved? Yes, there was. Am I still smiling? Yes, I am. A huge thank you to Ms. DeMane Davis, one of the fierce directors of Queen Sugar, for the retweet. Even the costume director of the show, Michelle Green, left in my comments that she “absolutely loved it.” The costume director loved my Halloween costume. Ha.
Those who know me know how much I stan Ava DuVernay. I will never stop fangirling over this. I was in Ava DuVernay’s IG stories. My grandchildren will know about this. I will tell them the story of how in 2022, I was seen by one of the most profound and influential filmmakers in history. And she called my picture perfection.
And just like that, 2022 went from being a hot mess to fabulous.
Thank you to my good photographer friend, Dan Lippitt, for his je ne sais quoi retouching skills. Thank you to my siblings for agreeing to my shenanigans and totally delivering! Love you!
My high from such a wonderful thing is eternally climactic. Still, 2022 couldn’t help but wallow in its ghettoness a little more because a couple of days ago, Tiffany Cross posted a memorandum to social media informing her fans of the abrupt cancellation of The Cross Connection by MSNBC.
Even writing about it requires deep breathing—in through the nose and out through the mouth to hold composure. Again, those who know me know how excited I was about the Cross Connection. Remember this post from last March? Or how I had to make her response to Mitch McConnell “quote of the month.” It would require an entirely separate, dedicated post for me to unpack all my thoughts and reads to people on this.
Tamron Hall posted a picture of her and Tiffany to social media with the caption, “And Still I Rise @tiffanydcross. YOU know the rest.” Though I am nowhere near Tiffany Cross’s caliber, I can attest to that. It’s a ‘Still I Rise’ kind of year. Because did I mention that Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey spoke to me on social media?
Tomorrow is election day. Vote like you’ve never voted before.
Remember Gmac Cash’s tribute to Governor Whitmer, also known as Big Gretch (but she couldn’t accept the Buffs)? Well, he wrote her another one. Gretch did. Did Eminem retweet it? Yes, he did. Congratulations, Eminem, on your induction into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
I got my first structured gel manicure a few days ago. So far, I am absolutely obsessed. I will be sharing my final verdict sometime next month.
The perfect little black sweater dress.
Currently reading Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae.
So excited because there are only three days until Wakanda Forever. I’ve already listened to Rihanna sing ‘Lift Me Up‘ a million times—love it. Clearly, I have ESP (extrasensory perception) because I was also Rihanna for Halloween this year.
Me, feeling very Miranda Priestly-ish after Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey hearted my post and called it perfect and excellent—I need to contact Leslie and see what she can do to minimize the press on all this. Ok, I’m done (for now).
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise…
You know the rest…
