How are you holding up? We are down to the final weeks of this decade-long year, and after listening to the sermon during virtual church service yesterday morning, I’m talking thanks.
I’m thankful to be a black woman.
Zendaya paid tribute to Donyale Luna, and I’m here for that. Donyale Luna, from the D (Detroit), is known to many as the world’s first Black supermodel.
Seeing Black women win, in any form, brings me joy.
Zendaya
Always, always, in awe of the exquisite intellect of Toni Morrison. I came across her 1975 keynote address at Portland State University, speaking on racism as a distraction:
The very serious function of racism, which is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language, and so you spend twenty years proving that you do. Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly, so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says that you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of that is necessary. There will always be one more thing. The distraction is no different from bombing Cambodia to keep the North Vietnamese from making their great push. And since not history, not anthropology, not social sciences seem capable in a strong and consistent way to grapple with that problem, it may very well be left to the artists to do it.
For art focuses on the single grain of rice, the tree-shaped scar, and the names of people, not only the number that arrived. And to the artists, one can only say, not to be confused, not to be confused. You don’t waste your energy fighting the fever; you must only fight the disease. And the disease is not racism; it is greed and the struggle for power.
Amber Ruffin is brilliant and Kamala Harris’ name isn’t that hard to pronounce.
I was thankful for virtual church service yesterday. You won’t find a better group of singers leading Praise and Worship than you will at Perfecting Church in Detroit. I don’t say this as a biased member either, just facts.
8 Things To Be Thankful For (When You Can’t Think Of Anything)
Add these tiny sliver hoops to my wish list.
Our new favorite Christmas movie, we’ve already watched it a time or five (who’s counting).
O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.
Psalm 105: 1-2
God has brought me far, kept me alive, and kept my family safe. It’s been difficult these last few months, weeks, days, but this week I choose to give thanks and talk of the wondrous works of God. Thank you for the word, Pastor Winans.
I hope you’re talking thanks, too!
What are you thankful for this week?
