How late am I on the new Crocs craze? Apparently, it was the “it” shoe of quarantine. Well, I just came across the news this week and then noticed Nicki Minaj wearing them in an IG post. Apparently, she had worn them in a post earlier last month, which frenzied a spike in pink Crocs sales, which caused the Crocs site to crash. So now, supposedly, 2021 is the year of the Crocs. Also, apparently, there is a “Crocs stiletto” in the making via a Balenciaga and Crocs collaboration.
I’ll make this quick—issa no for me. I owned a pair of white Crocs somewhere around fifteen years ago, back when I was a nurse on an inpatient unit at a cancer center in Detroit. I bought them then because, well, a lot of nurses were wearing them. Plus, I thought they would be comfy to wear while on my feet for a 12-hour shift. Eventually, I got rid of them and bought some New Balance gym shoes instead because I needed more support for those long shifts.
This is not a post to loathe Crocs. They have their place—lounging around outside or a quick run to the store. And I’m not sure if my fellow nurses still wear them. I’ll have to pay attention to this next time I’m walking hospital halls. The no for me is pairing them with suits and dresses and crowning this as the new “high-fashion.” I definitely don’t plan to buy a pair right now. This is me passing by the Crocs trend, observing in amazement.
I will give it to Nicki though, because if I ever saw “Crocs, but make it fashion,” it would be her genius accessorizing the shoe in Chanel charms. But still, it’s a no for me. Every time I see a pair of Crocs, I think of my nursing scrubs and the days of pounding the hospital pavement. And as much as I still love a great pair of heels, adding a kickstand to the Crocs (because that’s precisely what it looks like) will still be a no for me.
What about you? Are you buying a pair this year? (Please don’t wear them with a suit or a dress)
