I felt the tears, warm on my cheeks last night after I saw this picture—a little George Floyd safe and sound asleep in his mother’s arms. Any mother can feel that smile on her face—that sweet commission to be your child’s comfort, their home. One of the most important tasks you know you will ever be given.
Ash lay next to me last night. Sweet and sound just like this. His new Hot Wheels Monster truck that my mom had given him earlier lay next to his hand, finally loose from his little grip. All I could repeat was cover him, Lord. Cover him, please. Racism is relentless, but prayer still works. So Lord, cover our sons, cover our men.
Mona Smith wrote a prayer back in 2016, and it still holds ground…
Lord, protect my son. Keep him from dangers seen and unseen. Help him to know the difference between right and wrong. Lord protect him from forces that will misjudge him and steal his life for no reason at all. Just because he is a black man.
Lord give him supernatural discernment that he will know the difference between the good and bad. Protect his mind so that he does not misjudge and think that they are all alike. Lord, let the angels encamp around him so that hurt, harm, and danger doesn’t take him away from me prematurely. Protect his heart so he won’t grow bitter and cold toward others.
Lord my heart grows heavy with fear and anxiety. Give me the strength to combat this fear with faith, knowing that you are God and that there is no weapon formed against me or my son that will prosper because you have overcome it all. Thank you for protecting my son.
Amen.
